On the 19th of May we gave our young members the chance to go in a racing boat with our medal-winning adult racers.
The day started off with 2 of Leaside’s top racers, Luke O’Bryan and James Smythe, showing a short video and having a talk with the young people about what kayaking racing is all about.
Most of our young members had never been in a racing boat before and as the racing boats are less stable than the recreational boats there was some trepidation as there were higher chances of going for a swim!
All of the young people were shown how to safely get into a K1 (single person boat) and how to keep the boat stable. After some warm-ups the young people competed in a series of 150m races.
After the singles came a K2 (2 person boat) race, where adult racers were paired with a young person in each boat for a 1000m race. This was a great way for our younger members to get to know the racers and to work as a team.
We hope to see more of Leaside’s younger paddlers in many of the racing boats that Leaside has to offer, as well as other types of paddled craft - there is a lot of fun to be had in trying new things!
