On 18 August Edvinas Ramanauskas from Leaside CC travelled to Szeged in Hungary to represent Lithuania at the 2011 World Sprint Kayak Championships.
Ed was racing in K2 over 200m with a Lithuanian colleague. They had qualified to represent Lithuania by winning their national championships race in July.
4 Leaside members, Alan, Luke, Tadas and Iryna had travelled to Hungary to support Ed.
Ed’s first race was on 20 August. It was very very hot, and we were all extremely nervous as Ed’s boat went into the start bucket. Tension was high and unfortunately Ed was given a false start by the official. This made the situation even more tense, because if they were given a second false start they would be disqualified.
They finished 5th in their heat after a cautious start with this performance they qualified for the semi finals.
They had a much better run in their semi and finished a respectable 6th, qualifying them for the C final. With a tough qualification process behind them, they put in a fantastic performance in the C final. This race proved faster than the B final.
Ed finished 3rd in his final, missing Olympic qualification by just over .5 of a second.
This was a great achievement for Ed and we are looking forward to see him race at this weekend’s UK National Sprint Championships in Nottingham.
